No surprise, but the best way to get around the Motor City is by car. We have one of the best freeway systems in the country and surprisingly bearable traffic volumes even at peak times. Reasonably priced parking lots (some free) are plentiful, and there are a ton of transportation companies at your service.
Detroit’s downtown is fairly compact and walkable, but the People Mover is a good option if you want to quickly get across town or to one of the many attractions with a station. The route stops 13 times around downtown’s entertainment and business areas as well as at major hotels and Cobo Center.
Bus service within downtown and throughout the region is available via DDOT and SMART bus services, while Greyhound Lines and Amtrak both have stations in and around the city for longer treks.
