Lions

lions_sports.jpg

The Lions are a down-home team for downtown fans. Hailing from Ohio, the franchise moved to Detroit in the 1930s and quickly led the league. They won the championship in 1935, and then later in 1952, 1953 and 1957. While their fan-base grew, future victories dwindled. Although the Lions made the playoffs several times throughout the 1990s, they've yet to win another title.

OK, so this is a thorn in this championship city's side. But the Lions are nonetheless beloved and embraced. Detroiters rave about players like Dutch Clark, Bobby Layne, Joe Schmidt and Barry Sanders. And each year, fans flock to sold-out games to cheer their team on, especially the annual Thanksgiving Day game-a Detroit tradition.

In 2000, the Detroit Lions moved into a new stadium, Ford Field, located adjacent to Comerica Park in Detroit. Incorporating part of a former historic warehouse, the stadium conveys a hip, loft vibe-a rarity among football stadiums, to say the least. It's hard to score a ticket to this stadium, even with the Lion's less-than-stellar record. That's because for Lion fans, hope springs eternal. And each year, there's always next year.
